Ranking System

Each shinobi are given a rank when graduating their ninja academy and being recognized as an official part of their village's task force and defense. This rank determines the amount of jutsu you are allowed, and the missions that you may take. Below are their official definitions.

Genin (下忍; Literally meaning "low ninja", Meaning (Viz) "junior ninja") are the lowest level of ninja and also the ones that display the most difference in power. When they become genin, ninja start to do their bit for their village's economy – being sent on missions that the village gets paid for. They are typically sent either on D-rank missions, which are almost entirely risk-free jobs of manual labour, or, rarely, on C-rank missions, which are a cut above that and begin to verge on real "ninja" work that have a very low possibility of risk to the ninja involved. When Konohagakure was short-handed on upper-level ninja because of the invasion, the village had to occasionally send genin on higher-ranked missions.

Average Skill Rank: D
Allowed Missions: C Rank or lower. Sometimes allotted B Rank if the character is in a ninja team with a higher ranked leader.

Chūnin (中忍; Literally meaning "Middle Ninja", Meaning (Viz) "Journeyman Ninja") are ninja who are qualified to guide other ninja and lead missions. Chūnin have reached a level of maturity and ability that primarily consists of leadership skills and tactical prowess. Genin who do not have the skills to become chūnin are weeded out in the chūnin exams. Some of them, like Iruka Umino, Daikoku Funeno and Suzume move on to function as Academy teachers and others, like Shikamaru Nara, serve as team leaders in charge of small teams who need to make decisions and utilise the skills of the shinobi under their command to the maximum effect. Chūnin are typically sent on C-rank or B-rank missions.

Average Skill Rank: C
Allowed Missions: B Rank or lower. Sometimes allotted A Rank if the character is in a ninja team with (multiple) higher ranked shinobi.
Special Requirements: If not accepted by application, and a character wishes to rank up to this position, they must complete one of the following actions:
A) Participate in the Chūnin Exams and show some sort of talent. Determined by judges and then Kage
B) Special Kage approval for a good deed (i.e. protecting the country during an invasion, advancing them technologically, being a good Samaritan, etc.)

Special Jōnin (特別上忍, Tokubetsu Jōnin; English TV "Special Jōnin"; Literally meaning "Special High Ninja"; sometimes known as Tokujō for short) are ninja who, rather than all-around jōnin training, have jōnin-level ability in a specific area or skill, much like warrant officers in real-world militaries. They are elite specialists in their areas and are often assigned as subordinates to regular jōnin when their services are needed. One example of a Tokubetsu Jōnin is Ibiki Morino, whose unique ability to completely understand the workings of the human mind makes him a jōnin-level interrogation expert.

Average Skill Rank: B
Allowed Missions: A Rank or lower. No exceptions.
Special Requirements: If not accepted by application, and a character wishes to rank up to this position, they must complete one of the following actions:
A) Special Kage approval for good deed(s).

Jōnin (上忍, Jōnin; Literally meaning "High Ninja", Meaning (Viz) "Elite Ninja") are generally highly-experienced shinobi with great individual skill who serve as military captains. They are often sent on A-rank missions, and experienced jōnin may even be sent on S-rank missions (which are considered to be the greatest difficulty). It is not unusual for jōnin to go on missions alone. Jōnin are generally able to use at least two types of elemental chakra,[1] some genjutsu, and above average taijutsu skills.

Average Skill Rank: A
Allowed Missions: S Rank or lower. No exceptions.
Special Requirements: If not accepted by application, and a character wishes to rank up to this position, they must complete one of the following actions:
A) Eliminate a (PC) higher rank shinobi from another village.
B) Special Kage approval for good deed(s).

Sannin (伝説の三忍, Densetsu no Sannin) is the collective name of the three top renowned ninja from each village. These shinobi are hailed as the greatest ninja of their time. These shinobi are normally just below the power of the kage, if not on par with them. Many have observed the only thing separating Sannin from Kages are the title. If a kage were to pass, one of the three sannin would be chosen to take his/her place.

Average Skill Rank: S
Allowed Missions: SS Rank or lower.
Special Requirements: If not accepted by application, and a character wishes to rank up to this position, they must complete one of the following actions:
A) If there are 3 current Sannin in your village already, you must defeat one of them to gain their spot, regardless of completing the necessary missions.
B) Special Kage approval (Yes, Kage have the power to chose who their strongest shinobi are and who has the title.)
C) Must have already obtained glory and fame!

A Kage (影; Literally meaning "Shadow") is the leader of one of the five most powerful hidden villages and are generally acknowledged as the most powerful ninja in their respective villages. They are collectively known as the Five Kage (五影, Gokage; Literally meaning "Five Shadows"). The term "Kage" is not used to just refer to any leader of any village. Only the leaders of hidden villages of the Five Great Shinobi Countries are referred to as such. The Kage oversee the activities of their villages, from sending ninja teams out on their missions to making the hard decisions regarding the safety of their people. The first Kage was the Hokage (火影; Literally meaning "Fire Shadow") Hashirama Senju of Konohagakure. Following the Hokage title, emerged the Kazekage (風影; Literally meaning "Wind Shadow") of Sunagakure, the Mizukage (水影; Literally meaning "Water Shadow") of Kirigakure, Raikage (雷影; Literally meaning "Lightning Shadow") of Kumogakure, and Tsuchikage (土影; Literally meaning "Earth Shadow") of Iwagakure.

Average Skill Rank: S
Missions Allowed: SS Rank or lower. They also have the power to assign missions, manage their village, and have access to all information retained through the shinobi force or otherwise.
Special Requirements: If not accepted by application, and a character wishes to rank up to this position, they must complete one of the following actions:
A) You MUST have already obtained great renown within your village!
B) You MUST be elected by the villagers unless you take control of the village by other means.
C) The previous Kage must perish or resign.

*Please Note: Any and all ranking up requires Kage approval. The Kage has the right to deny any request to rank up, despite meeting the requirements.

Jutsu System

Jutsu are obviously extremely important in a shinobi's career, and establish the basis for ninja powers and abilities. It's for that reason the Jutsu System was created to regulate said powers. When creating a character's "Data Page" you are granted a certain amount of free jutsu dependent on your ninja rank. The ranking follows this system.

Free Jutsu Ranking:
Genin: 3
Chunin: 5
Special Jounin: 7
Jounin: 9
Kage/Sannin: 11

Note all shinobi are given the basic academy jutsu techs for free!

Jutsu Training Requirements:
E Rank: 150+ words and 2,000 Ryo/Outright buy 5,000 Ryo
D Rank 300+ words and 4,000 Ryo/Outright buy 9,000 Ryo
C Rank 500+ words and 8,000 Ryo/Outright buy 15,000 Ryo
B Rank 700+ words and 16,000 Ryo/Outright buy 35,000 Ryo
A Rank 1000+ words and 24,000 Ryo/Outright buy 52,000 Ryo
S Rank 1500+ words and 29,000 Ryo/Outright buy 65,000 Ryo
SS Rank 2000+ words and 35,000 Ryo/Outright buy: 90,000 Ryo

When posting a training topic, make sure to indicate it is one so a mod can approve it as soon as possible with the appropriate tag (i.e. "Day in the Field [training]"). After a training topic is approved, you may post a request for update on your character "Data Page." If you have the necessary ryo, and that is approved, you have successfully learned that technique!

Skill Level Rank

This is different from your actual rank. A skill level rank is simply D, C, B, A, S, or even SS! Your skill level rank defines how strong your ninja is. Your rank is simply defined by what position your Village has assigned you. While your actual skill could be totally different.

However when first creating your character what Village rank you have defines your starting skill level rank. This is defined by what the average for your rank is (see Limitations below) You may be stuck at Genin, however that does not mean you cannot get more skilled! Now you may be asking how would one rank up? Well, it is quite simple!

Here are the Five primary ways:

  • Defeat someone who is two or more ranks higher than you
  • Complete 10 missions that are two ranks higher than your rank and complete 20 that are one higher than your rank!
  • Complete 5 NPC missions that are two higher than your rank or perform excellently in a global event
  • Be deemed worthy by your Kage and an Administrator
  • Obtain enough skill to be considered in the next bracket

Limitations

  • D Rank: Can only use up to C ranked Jutsu, no higher!
  • C Rank: Can only use up to B ranked Jutsu, no higher!
  • B Rank: Can only use up to A ranked Jutsu, no higher!
  • A Rank: Can only use up to S ranked Jutsu, no higher!
  • S Rank: Can use all Jutsu ranks!
  • SS Rank: Can use all Jutsu ranks!
